The History of Matcha: From Ancient Tea Ceremonies to Today's Favorite Green Tea Drink

John Cronin • July 7, 2026

Matcha has become one of the world's most recognizable beverages, appearing in everything from lattes and smoothies to desserts and bubble tea. Its vibrant green color, smooth earthy flavor, and natural energy have made it a favorite among tea lovers and health conscious consumers alike.

But matcha's story began centuries before it appeared on modern café menus.

What Is Matcha?

Matcha is a finely ground powder made from specially grown green tea leaves. Unlike traditional green tea, where the leaves are steeped and removed, matcha is whisked directly into water or milk, allowing you to consume the entire tea leaf.

This unique preparation gives matcha its bold flavor, creamy texture, vibrant green color, and naturally occurring antioxidants.

Where Did Matcha Originate?

Although matcha is most closely associated with Japan today, its earliest roots trace back to China during the Song Dynasty (960–1279).

During this period, tea leaves were steamed, formed into cakes, ground into powder, and whisked with hot water. This preparation method became popular among monks and scholars, who valued tea for its calming yet alert state of mind during meditation.

How Matcha Came to Japan

In the late 12th century, Japanese Buddhist monk Eisai traveled to China to study Zen Buddhism. When he returned to Japan, he brought tea seeds and the powdered tea preparation method with him.

Eisai believed green tea supported both physical health and mental clarity. His writings helped introduce matcha to Japanese culture, where it continued to evolve over the following centuries.

Rather than disappearing, the practice flourished in Japan and became deeply connected with Zen Buddhism.

The Japanese Tea Ceremony

As matcha gained popularity, it became the centerpiece of the Japanese tea ceremony, known as chanoyu.

More than simply preparing tea, the ceremony emphasizes:

  • Harmony
  • Respect
  • Purity
  • Tranquility

Every movement, from whisking the tea to serving guests, is performed with intention and mindfulness.

Today, tea ceremonies remain one of Japan's most treasured cultural traditions.

How Matcha Is Grown

Premium matcha requires a unique growing process.

Several weeks before harvest, tea plants are shaded from direct sunlight. This encourages the leaves to produce higher levels of chlorophyll and amino acids, giving matcha its:

  • Brilliant emerald green color
  • Naturally smooth flavor
  • Rich umami taste
  • Reduced bitterness

After harvesting, the leaves are steamed, dried, stems and veins are removed, and the remaining leaves are slowly stone ground into an exceptionally fine powder.

This careful process contributes to matcha's distinctive quality and flavor.

Why Matcha Became Popular Around the World

Over the past two decades, matcha has grown from a traditional Japanese tea into a global favorite.

Coffee shops, cafés, dessert shops, and bubble tea stores now feature matcha in countless recipes because customers appreciate its:

  • Smooth, balanced energy
  • Naturally earthy flavor
  • Versatility in hot and iced drinks
  • Vibrant appearance
  • Premium feel

Social media has also helped introduce millions of people to matcha through colorful drinks, creative recipes, and café culture.
